Artwork files: format guidelines

This page is also available as a downloadable PDF file.

The Authors should prepare all figures to be published in the EYEC Monograph according to the following rules.

For information on how to prepare the manuscript of your document and for advice on how to fill out the submission template, please consult the Guidelines for Authors.

File naming

Please name figure files as follows:

XXX_Surname_Name_Y_figZZ.jpg

  • XXX: submission type (ABS, ART or MON for an abstract, scientific article or monographic article),
  • Surname_Name: surname and first name of the submitting author,
  • Y: number of the submission (1 or 2),
  • ZZ: figure number, in accordance with the numbering in the submitted manuscript,
  • .jpg: figure file format (.jpg, .png., .svg or .pdf)

Photographs

All photographs should be provided in JPG or PNG format. The file should have a resolution of at least 300 DPI. Colour and grayscale images are accepted.

Colour images will be converted into grayscale during the printing process. The online version of the Monograph will be published with full-colour images.

Before submitting a document, we recommend testing if the photographs will be legible after converting into grayscale. Images containing colours of similar brightness could lose essential details in print. All popular image processing programs have the option to convert the image into grayscale.

Labels and titles should be provided in the text of the submitted document. Do not include labels or titles in the image file itself.

Schemes, technical diagrams

Figures containing schemes or technical diagrams (e.g. chemical diagrams, flowcharts, process diagrams, technical drawings) should be provided as:

  • raster PNG files with a resolution of at least 300 DPI in colour or grayscale, or
  • vector SVG or PDF files with all text converted into outlines.

Please ensure that all text in the figure is legible in the image’s intended size. We recommend choosing a font size of at least 9 points.

Labels and titles should be provided in the text of the submitted document. Do not include labels or titles in the image file itself.

Before submitting a document, please check if lines of different colours will still be distinguishable after converting into grayscale during the printing process. The online version of the Monograph will be published with full-colour images.

Tip: JPG files are not recommended for figures containing schemes or technical diagrams. JPG files compression causes artefacts around all text characters and sharp edges. To ensure the highest quality of illustrations in the Monograph, we recommend exporting figures in PNG or vector formats.

Results charts

Figures in the form of charts (such as bar charts, line and dot charts, surface charts) displaying results of studies should be provided as PNG files with a resolution of at least 300 DPI. Colour or grayscale illustrations are accepted.

Before submitting a document, please check if lines, bars, dots, or surfaces of different colours will still be distinguishable after converting into grayscale during the printing process. In the printed version of the Monograph, all figures will be displayed in full colour.

We advise differentiating

  • dot markers in charts with their shape (e.g. circles, squares, triangles, stars),
  • lines in charts with the type and thickness of the stroke (e.g. solid, dashed, dotted lines),
  • bars in bar charts with a label under, on, or next to them

rather than their colour.

Please ensure that all text in the figure is legible in the image’s intended size. We recommend choosing a font size of at least 9 points.

Labels and titles should be provided in the text of the submitted document. Do not include labels or titles in the image file itself.

Tip: JPG files are not recommended for figures containing results charts. JPG files compression causes artefacts around all text characters and sharp edges. To ensure the highest quality of illustrations in the Monograph, we recommend exporting figures in the PNG format.

Image resolution guide

To ensure the high quality of illustrations in the printed version of the Monograph, please consult the following table when preparing illustrations.

The Monograph will be typeset in A4 page format in a two-column layout. Figures can span across a single-column width up to a two-column width. Example resolutions based on the image width are presented below.
